British Values

British Values

At The Oaks, we value the possible diverse/ethnic backgrounds of our pupils and families and recognise the importance of educating our children about the wealth of diversity in Britain and our school.

We celebrate cultural/ethnic diversity through lessons, whole school events and assemblies. We promote British Values throughout our curriculum and extra curricular activities/experiences, as these values teach tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and wider world.

British Values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

At The Oaks we pride ourselves on our school’s diversity and believe it is vital to teach our children to respect everyone and celebrate the different beliefs, cultures and traditions people may have. Our curriculum encourages children to be curious about the world around them and to ask questions about different religions and cultures. Everyone at The Oaks treats each other with respect.

Democracy

Democracy is recognised and valued within the school and every child has a voice at The Oaks. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard and use their vote through activities from deciding their representatives to choosing class rewards. The children are also taught the importance of accepting and celebrating democratic outcomes in a positive and supportive manner.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police, Fire Service etc. are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

At The Oaks, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. The children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are supported to exercise these choices safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of challenge, of how they record, or participation in our extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Mutual Respect

'Respect’ is a core value at The Oaks and pupils are a part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown. It is reiterated through everything we do on a daily basis, from our gates to our classrooms, and from our play to our learning - ‘respect’ runs through everything we do.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

This is achieved through enhancing pupils' understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society, community and school and by giving them opportunities to experience and explore such diversity. Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying have been followed and supported by learning in RE and PSHE. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.
