Intent

At The Oaks Primary School and Nursery, our science curriculum is designed for children to grow and relate to Science in and outside of the classroom.  Our clear progression of skills in Science allows for children to engage in practical enquiry questions to answer questions, record and present evidence and make careful observations.  At The Oaks, we want our children to develop scientific knowledge and understanding, answer scientific questions about the world around them and understand the uses and implications of science today and in the future.

How is this subject taught?

At The Oaks, we use the Kent science scheme which links to the national curriculum to meet the needs of the children in our school.    Knowledge and skills have been carefully placed across the units and years with sequential component knowledge clearly broken down into steps and composite tasks.  Although they are taught together, there is clarity about which knowledge is disciplinary and which is substantive.

Each unit of the Primary Science scheme of work (from Year 1 to Year 6) covers the topics required from the National Curriculum.

Assessment

Science is assessed each term, after each unit.  Teachers identify who is exceeding expectations and children who are not meeting the expected standard.  Teachers will be mindful of any significant groups who are not making progress and ensure they keep a close on how to support them the following term.
