Intent

At The Oaks Primary School and Nursery, we have designed our Design and Technology curriculum to engage our children to develop a range of skills, including creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, compassion and courage.  Our DT provision fosters a love for learning and provides meaningful experiences for our pupils.

We aim that by the time the children leave in Year 6, they will have experienced a range of DT areas and built upon skills from previous years.  Our curriculum ensures that children leave us with the understanding of the connection between design and technology and the wider world.

How is this subject taught?

Three units of DT are covered across a year; these include mechanisms and structure, textiles and food technology.  Each unit follows an enquiry based approach where children are encouraged to plan, explore and create using a range of equipment and resources.  They actively engage in DT lessons, demonstrating enthusiasm, enjoyment and curiosity.

Assessment

DT is assessed each term.  Teachers identify who is exceeding expectations and children who are not meeting the expected standard.  Teachers will be mindful of any significant groups who are not making progress and ensure they keep a close on how to support them the following term.
