Geography
Intent
At The Oaks Primary School and Nursery, we encourage pupils to be curious about the world around them, sharing ideas, opinions and knowledge and the physical and human features within it. They will be taught knowledge of their local area, our country and where we are in relation to the rest of the world, using a range of geographical skills and concepts.
By the time our children leave Year 6, pupils will have a clear understanding of their place in the world, knowing how their actions can impact the global environment, and show compassion and understanding of the changing world around them.
How is this subject taught?
We use the Pearson Primary Geography scheme which is progressive and carefully sequenced: in the periods studied (chronologically), as well as the substantive and disciplinary knowledge selected.
In Key Stage 1, the three geography units are taught across Year 1 and Year 2.
In Key Stage 2, there are three geography units per year group.
The scheme we use has 4 concept toolkits:
-
Decision-making
-
Cause and effect
-
Change
-
Location and place
Assessment
Geography is assessed after each unit and through mini quizzes throughout the topics. Teachers identify who is exceeding expectations and children who are not meeting the expected standard. Teachers will be mindful of any significant groups who are not making progress and ensure they keep a close on how to support them the following term.
