Mathematics and Numeracy
Maths at The Oaks
Intent
At The Oaks, we aim for our children to become fluent in the fundamental skills of mathematics, with a focus on arithmetic skills. Through our curriculum, we encourage curiosity by making every child a problem solver, developing their language and communication skills, mathematical thinking and conceptual understanding.
How is this subject taught?
At The Oaks, we teach maths through the Mathematics Mastery approach. Maths Mastery is underpinned by three principles:
-
Conceptual understanding - our pupils deepen their understanding by representing concepts using objects, pictures, symbols and words.
-
Language and communication - our pupils are given opportunities to widen their vocabulary and strengthen their language skills. Maths talk is an important part of every maths lesson.
-
Mathematical thinking - we allow our pupils to have opportunities to think mathematically. Throughout the curriculum, you will see tasks that require learners to specialise and generalise and to work systematically.
We also have maths meetings during the day to reinforce key concepts and ensure our children are confident with number and mathematics principles.
Assessment
We use NTS tests 3 times a year. This is a national benchmark test which gives us information on ability and gaps in knowledge which we can then work on filling and plugging the gaps to help children achieve their potential.
