Intent

At The Oaks Primary School and Nursery, our PE curriculum supports children’s resilience, independence and confidence.  It enables them to lead an active and healthy lifestyle; helping them to keep mentally and physically healthy.  Our PE curriculum allows children to have the courage to try a wide range of sports and develop their fundamental physical, technical and tactical sporting skills.

Through our team sports, children develop their ability to show compassion and gain leadership skills by learning to be part of a team or representing the school in county sports events.

How is this subject taught?

At The Oaks, PE is taught twice a week. One lesson will follow Real PE - developing children’s fundamental movement skills as well as their physical learning behaviours.

The second PE lesson will alternate between Real Gym or Real Dance - building on movement skills using patterns and sequencing to develop creative routines to perform individually and in groups. Gym and Dance lessons will also be linked to the learning behaviours taught in Real PE to reinforce these behaviours.

In Year 5 and 6, children will also be introduced to a sport focus in their second lesson of PE. This will introduce children to the idea of linking their fundamental skills they have been taught and applying these to more competitive game situations, learning rules and tactics to support their game play.

Year 4 will attend swimming lessons as their second PE lesson in order to work towards the swimming objectives set in the national curriculum.

Assessment

PE is assessed each term, after each unit.  Teachers identify who is exceeding expectations and children who are not meeting the expected standard.  Teachers will be mindful of any significant groups who are not making progress and ensure they keep a close on how to support them the following term.
